Frequently asked questions

Will my bank refund me if I was tricked into sending money?

In most cases, yes. Since 7 October 2024, banks must reimburse victims of authorised push payment (APP) scams made by Faster Payments or CHAPS between UK accounts — up to £85,000 — unless you acted with gross negligence. Claim within 13 months of the payment.

How long does my bank have to refund me?

For APP scams, normally 5 business days, or up to 35 if they need more information. For payments you didn't authorise, by the end of the next business day after you tell them.

I paid by card. Can I get my money back?

If you paid by credit card and the item cost between £100 and £30,000, you can claim under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Otherwise, ask your bank for a chargeback under the card scheme rules.

My bank said no. What now?

Ask for their final response in writing. You then have 6 months to take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free.

Someone is offering to recover my money for a fee. Can I trust them?

Be very careful. Fake lawyers, 'hackers' and even fake police officers target scam victims a second time. No legitimate organisation charges upfront to recover money.
