Frequently asked questions

Do councils send parking fines by text?

No. Councils issue parking fines on your windscreen or by post, never by text. Genuine notices say when and where it happened and explain how to pay and appeal. Forward scam texts to 7726.

Is a text about a DVLA vehicle tax refund real?

No. DVLA doesn't send texts or emails with links asking for personal or payment details, and vehicle tax refunds are made automatically.

Does HMRC text about tax refunds?

No. HMRC never contacts you by text or email about a tax refund. Forward suspicious texts to 60599 and emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.

I've already paid. What now?

Call your bank straight away (dial 159), cancel the card or report the transfer, and report it to Report Fraud. Most UK bank-transfer scams must be reimbursed — our 'Scammed?' helper explains your rights and deadlines.
